He practiced dentistry here for 50 years and was a founding director of Word-of-Mouth: Oral Health Connection, a non-profit dental outreach organization.

Pentecostal minister
NEW IBERIA – Services for 50-year Pentecostal minister the Rev. Claudie Hagan will be Saturday. He died Dec. 5 at age 69.
He was minister of New Life Christian Center for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife Gwen and two sons.

Noted architect
NEW ORLEANS – Services for noted architect Ralph Allen Eskew are pending. He died Dec. 10 at age 65.
He was design director of the New Orleans World’s Fair and founder of Eskew-Dumiez-Ripple. He also designed Phases I and II of the Aquarium of the Americas and a 16-acre park adjacent to it. He also designed the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette and the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 13, 2013 at Ardoin's Funeral Home of Eunice with Deacon David Guillory officiating for Michael Jerome “Mikey” Soileau, Jr., a resident of Basile, who passed away at Acadian Medical Center on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Mikey was born on April 2, 1991, in Lafayette, Louisiana to Michael J. Soileau, Sr. of Basile and Patti Menard of Vidor, Texas.
Mikey loved his baby girls, had a soft heart and would do anything for anyone. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time. He was Valedictorian of Vidor High School in 2008. Mikey was a loving father, son, brother, grandson and uncle and will be sadly missed by all the lives he has touched.
Mikey is also survived by his daughters, McKinley Hinson and Emilee Soileau, one sister, Ashly N. Soileau and her husband, Steven Taylor of Orange, Tx., nephews, Steven and Bryson Taylor, paternal grandmother, Sue Huckaby and grandfather, Kenneth Brown, both of Basile and maternal grandparents Rita and Roy Menard of Church Point.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service, Friday, December 13, 2013 at Ardoin's Funeral Home of Eunice.

EUNICE~It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Elma D. Andrus announces her passing on Monday, December 09, 2013 at Acadian Medical Center in Eunice surrounded by her loving family. She was 75. A Celebration of Life will be celebrated at 12 noon on Friday, December 13, 2013 at Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Eunice. Interment will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Deacon Gary Gaudin officiating.
Elma was a homemaker and devoted her life to the care of her family. She loved to cook and work in the yard with her flowers. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be missed deeply by her two daughters, Donna A. Fitzgerald and husband, Carl of Basile and Sherald Lynn Manuel and Joel Ortego of Eunice; brother-in-law, Kenneth Andrus of Basile; sister, Earline Guillory of Eunice. The joys of her life her three grandchildren, Joseph Manuel, Jr. and wife, Jada, Ryan Paul Manuel and wife, Lynnae and Holly A. Courville and Donnie Talbot; five great grandchildren, Gavin Olivier, Ayden Courville, Kenneth Courville Talbot, Brooklyn Manuel and Houston Manuel; two nieces, Debbie Thibodeaux and Norma Dean Phillips; and a godchild, Patrick Guillory.
She now rests in Heaven with her beloved husband, Joseph Calvin Andrus; parents, Raphael and Ophelia Manuel Devillier; brothers, Nelon and Russell Devillier and a sister, Rena Fontenot.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Eunice on Thursday, December 12th from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm and again on Friday, December 13th from 8:00 am until time of services. Deacon Gary Gaudin will recite a Rosary at 5:00 pm Thursday evening.

Clifford George Ardoin, Sr.

OPELOUSAS - A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted for Mr. Clifford George Ardoin, Sr., age 89, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. The Reverend Monsignor Keith DeRouen will conduct the service. Rite of Committal will be held in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas, LA. A native of Mamou, LA and a resident of Opelousas, LA,
Mr. Ardoin passed away at 4:50 am on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Lafayette General Hospital.
Mr. Ardoin was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained during battle on the Philippine Islands. Mr. Ardoin had a long career in the insurance industry before retiring. After his retirement he enjoyed pursuing two of his passions, cooking and playing Cajun music on his fiddles. The father of eleven children Mr. Ardoin had many people in his life that cared a great deal about him and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jane Hebert Ardoin, his children, Loretta Stubblefield of Lafayette, Charlotte Doyle (Jim) of Abbeville, Karen Prudhomme of Carencro, Clifford Ardoin, Jr. (Dani) of Opelousas, Lessie Credeur (Clint) of Sunset, Dennis Ardoin of Lafayette, Charles Ardoin (Jean) of Lafayette, Shannon Ardoin (Trina) of Port Barre, Molly Ardoin of Lafayette and Christopher Ardoin (Angie) of Church Point, his step children Vic (Kindy) Hebert, Kirk Nona Hebert, Phyllis (Dave) McGee one sister, Alverda Desohotels of Opelousas, 32 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father Dorzelin Ardoin and his mother Marie Douget Ardoin, by Geraldine Savant Ardoin and Evelyn (Joy) Ardoin the mothers of his eleven children, his sister Lurlene Granger, his brother Wayne Ardoin, and his daughter Sheila Ardoin Walsh and his step son, Phillip Hebert.
Pallbearers will be Cliff Ardoin Jr., Dennis Ardoin, Charles Ardoin, Shannon Ardoin, Chris Ardoin, Jeremy Lanclos, Craig Doyle, Cory Ardoin and honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and again from 9:00 a.m. until time of services on Thursday. A Rosary was prayed on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

LAKE CHARLES ~ Jeanette F. Chapman, 81, of Lake Charles, Louisiana died at 12:49 PM Monday, December 9, 2013.
Jeanette was born August 18, 1932 in Basile, Louisiana to Theodore and Rose Fruge. Jeanette was a Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Lady since 1990.
Ms. Jeanette loved to shop, listening to french music, and dancing. She was a longtime member of St. Margaret Catholic Church where she was an Altar society member.
Survivors include one son, Darrell “Buggs” Chapman and wife Faith; grandchildren, Ashton Piechota, Jett Piechota, Jack Chapman, Seth Chapman, and Amanda Chapman; two great grandchildren; one niece, Ann Sonnier; one nephew, Burkman P. Fruge Jr.; and lifelong friends, Charles and Barbara Bourgeois.
She is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 30 plus years, Raphael C. Chapman; two sons, Raphael Chapman Jr., Kenneth Wayne Chapman; and one brother, Burkman P. Fruge Sr..
Services will be Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Johnson Funeral Home.
Visitation was on Wednesday from 5:00PM until 9:00PM with a Rosary at 6:00PM.

EUNICE~Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at C.H. Mason Memorial Church of God In Christ in Eunice for Mr. Charles “E.J.” Charlie’ Young, Sr., 65, who passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at his residence in Eunice. Interment will be in Lanse Meg Cemetery also known as Reed Cemetery in Mamou.
Rev. Johnathan L. Williams, Sr. will be officiating the funeral services.
Mr. Young is survived by: four sons, Charles Young, Jr. (Julia) and Melvin Young (Tienisha Doucet), both of Mamou, Christopher Young (Bernadine) and Matthew Young (Michala Deville), both of Eunice; five daughters, Commellia Guillory (Gerald), Tracey Young (Ron Toussaint), Sylvia Young (Herman Celestine) and Kelly Frank (Ryan), all of Eunice and Casselina Richardson (Joshua) of Baton Rouge; a grandson he raised, Darius Young of Eunice; seventeen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Darlene Young; his parents, Paul Young and Camilla Matthew; one sister, Gloria Fontenot; one nephew, Alvin Fontenot; and grandsons, Braylon and Bryson Young.
Visitation will be observed on Saturday, December 14, 2013 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at C.H. Mason Memorial C.O.G.I.C.

LAFAYETTE ~Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 13, 2013 at a 2:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille for Versie Briscoe Schwartz, 82, who died on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at her residence in Lafayette.
Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Eunice. Reverend Jody Jagneaux will officiate graveside services.
Reverend Gilbert J. Dutel, Pastor of St. Edmond Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Ethan Sloan and Bailey Sloan. Giftbearers will be Tristyn Briscoe, Gentry Briscoe and Gage Newman. Stephanie Hoffpauir, organist and soloist, will sing for the services, “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “One Bread, One Body,” “If You Can See Me Now,” and “The 23rd Psalm.” Kelly Sloan will give the eulogy.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Gail Briscoe Adcock and Dianne Schwartz McGuire; one son, Al Briscoe; four grandchildren, Kelly Adcock Sloan, Stacy Adcock Newman, Christopher Broussard and Emily McGuire Brown; six great grandchildren, Bailey “Buck” Sloan, Ethan O. Sloan, Tristyn Briscoe, Gentry Briscoe, Gage Newman and Josalyn Newman; two sisters, Ruth Boudreaux and Judy Poulet; and two brothers, Ferdie Jagneaux and Larry Jagneaux.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alceus Jagneaux and Elmire Olivier and Lawrence Jagneaux Sr.; her husbands, Aldrey J. Briscoe and Sidney Aaron Schwartz; two sisters, Mabel Moreau and an infant sister; three brothers, Melvin Jagneaux and his wife, Viella, Ray Jagneaux and Marshall Jagneaux; and one grandchild, C. Luke Briscoe.
Versie Briscoe Schwartz was born on November 21, 1931 in Opelousas, Louisiana, was a native of Eunice and a resident of Lafayette for over 29 years. She worked as a cosmetology instructor for most of her life until her retirement. Versie loved teaching and helping others, especially at the Miles Perret Center, and had a unique way of making everyone she met feel like a special family member. She loved to travel and spend time with her family, especially her granddaughter, who was her best friend and light of her life. Versie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Pallbearers will be Bailey “Buck” Sloan, Ethan O. Sloan, Rod Touchet, Jody Jagneaux, Ricky Brown and Junior Snyder. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Adcock and Billy Poulet.

EUNICE-It is with great sadness that the family of Marjorie McGee Cummings announces her passing on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Evangeline Oaks Guest House in Carencro. She was 90.
A Celebration of Life was celebrated on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Eunice. Interment followed in the St. Paul Cemetery with Pastor Tim Moffett officiating.
Marjorie was a retired teller from St. Landry Bank in Eunice with over 30 years of service. She was a wonderful cook and loved to work in the yard with her flowers. She was also an avid fisherman and Saints fan. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend who will be missed deeply by her sons, Gregory McGee of Lafayette and Byron McGee and wife, Dwania of Katy, TX; daughter-in-law, Susan Fontenot of Deridder; sisters, Lillian Funk of Sugarland, TX and Marcelle Bown of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Justin and Sara McGee of Katy, TX, Denise Bertrand and husband, Brandon of Eunice, and Kim Parta and husband, Steve of Allen, TX; and four great-grandchildren, Connor and Luke Bertrand, and Ava and Emma Parta.
She now rests in Heaven with her beloved husbands, Curley J. McGee and Andy Cummings; and son, Gordon James McGee.

EUNICE-It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the loss of our loved one, Harvey Vigee, on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at his home in Eunice. He was 73. A Celebration of Life will be Celebrated at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Eunice with Deacon Gary Gaudin officiating.
Harvey was a retired Basile State Bank President. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He loved the outdoors and was an avid LSU fan. A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Harvey will be dearly missed by his wife of 54 years, Shelva Vigee of Eunice; his children, Randall Vigee of Eunice, Timothy Vigee and wife, Cathy of Georgetown, TX, and Denise Vigee MacDanel and husband, Shannon of Baton Rouge; sister, Betty V. Bertrand of Lake Charles; eight grandchildren, Ashley Prudhomme, Jennifer Vigee, Josh Vigee, Nicholas Vigee, Christopher Vigee, Dionne Vigee, Alex MacDanel and Gabe MacDanel; and two great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Abigail Prudhomme.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Walter and Eva McDaniel Vigee; brother, Oran Vigee; and sister, Ramona Begnaud.

MINDEN – Services for funeral director Orville Cox will be Sunday.He died Dec. 12 at age 86.
He was owner and operator of Affiliated Enterprises, parent company of Centuries and Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home and Cemeteries and Hill Crest Florist. He was a founding member of the Webster Parish Ducks Unlimited chapter.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy and two sons.

Baptist educator, minister
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Services for Baptist educator and minister Dr. William Hull will be Monday. He died Dec. 10 at age 83.
He was a minister for 60 years and was former pastor of First Baptist Church, Shreveport, La. He was dean and provost at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for 17 years. He was author of 18 books.
Survivors include a son and a daughter.

NLU business prof
MONROE – Services for retired NLU business professor Dr. James Smith, Jr. will be Friday. He died Dec. 11 at age 87.
He taught business writing and communication for 25 years at NLU and was prominent in Boy Scouting.

Ida Guillory Rider died at her home in Lake Charles Wednesday, December 4, 2013. She was born November 19, 1921, at Chataignier, LA, to Nelson Guillory and Elina LaFleur Guillory. Mrs. Rider worked at a grocery store clerk and housekeeper at Savoy Memorial Hospital, but her best-loved job was making a home for her husband, children, and grandchildren,
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Austin Rider; firstborn daughter, Diana Rider Granger; son-in-law, Charles Newman; and her sister, Cavel Duplechin.
Survivors include her daughter, Jan Rider Newman; brother, Herbert Guillory and his wife Loretta; grandsons, Paul Andrew Newman and Mark Granger; granddaughters, Tina Fruge and Donna Benoit; son-in-law Gil Granger; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday December 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile. Father David Hebert will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held on Friday December 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Quirk & Son Funeral Home in Basile. A Rosary will be prayed by Father David Hebert at 6:00 p.m. that evening. The funeral home will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday for visitation until time of service.
The family extends special thanks to Doris Bell, Heart of Hospice and Dr. Melissa Rasberry for the good care they took of Mrs. Rider, as well as Evangeline Home Health, who gave her home care for many years. Special thanks also go to the wonderful circle of friends she had at Tower Oaks.

Blue Dog artist
LAFAYETTE – Services for “Blue Dog” artist George Rodrigue are pending. He died Saturday at age 69.
He was Louisiana’s artist laureate whose paintings, always including a Blue Dog, hang around the world. His art is the subject of 12 books. His Foundation of the Arts raised more than $2 million to help New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Teacher
LAFAYETTE – Services for long-time teacher and member of a pioneer Acadiana family Maxann Duson Dantzler are Monday. She died Dec. 12 at age 76.
She taught in Crowley for several years and was retired from the St. Tammany school system. She was a grandchild of W.W. Duson and a great-niece of C.C. Duson, founders of Crowley and Eunice.
Survivors include her husband, Walter and three children.

Coach-teacher
CLINTON – Services for Coach Hubert Polk, Jr. are Monday. He died Dec. 13 at age 83.
He was a former coach, teacher and administrator at Clinton High and at Silliman Institute. He was Clinton volunteer fire chief for almost 40 years and was a member of the Southeaster Louisiana University Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife Gail and two children.

Education supervisor
RAYVILLE – Services for retired state education supervisor Jean Christian will be Wednesday. She died Sunday at age 88.
She taught 18 years in Richland Parish schools before becoming Louisiana Dept. of Education Supervisor of Business and Office Education, holding that post for four superintendents -- Bill Dodd, Louis Michot, Kelly Nix and Tom Clausen.
Survivors include a son and a daughter.

Ministry founder
SHREVEPORT – Services will be Wednesday for World Ministry Fellowship founder the Rev. William Brown. He died Dec. 13 at age 87 in Parker, Texas.
His first pastorate was in DeQuincy. He then pastored Shreveport Tabernacle before founding Faith Fellowship Church in Shreveport/Bossier City, where he was pastor for more than 30 years. He also founded Faith Bible College of Shreveport/Bossier City.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy and four children.

Retired diocese official
OPELOUSAS – Services for retired Diocese of Lafayette official Bernel Fontenot will be Thursday. He died Dec. 16 at age 74.
He worked for the diocese almost 40 years, retiring as director of the Office of Housing and Institutions. He supervised development of more than 30 facilities designed to provide housing for elderly, handicapped and low-income individuals and families.
Survivors include his wife Jane and a son.

BATON ROUGE – Services for coach and Adult Education administrator Robert Barrett will be Thursday. He died Dec. 16 at age 87.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.) Junior College Hall of Fame. He was head track and assistant football and basketball coach at Woodlawn High for 25 years and retired as administrator at Rosenwald Adult Education Center.
Survivors include five children.

Coach, principal
ALEXANDRIA – Services for former coach, principal and assistant school superintendent Tommy G. Smith will be Thursday. He died Dec. 16 at age 78.
He was with the Rapides school system almost 40 years. He was instrumental in opening Sheriff William Earl Hilton’s Youth Academy Boot Camp, from which he later retired.
Survivors include his wife Katie.
Arrangements are by Hixson Bros.

Poultry expert
COLFAX – Services for poultry industry leader George Ronald Owens, Sr. will be Thursday. He died Dec. 16 at age 69.
He developed laying houses in Natchitoches Parish when Country Pride located there. He was a former member of the state Board of Directors of Farm Bureau and was president of the Natchitoches Parish Farm Bureau at his death. He was a chairman of the Louisiana Poultry advisory Committee.
Survivors include his wife Madeline and a son.
Arrangements are by Kramer.

Bossier administrator
HAUGHTON – Services for long-time Bossier Parish administrator James Ramsey will be Thursday. He died at age 78.
He was a mechanical engineer and was on the board of Citizens National Bank.
Survivors include two children.
Arrangements are by Hillcrest.

Civil engineer
NEW ORLEANS – Services for civil engineer Lloyd Held, Jr., who came out of retirement to assist with post-Hurricane Katrina recovery, will be Saturday. He died Dec. 15 at age 71.
He worked for Eustis Engineering for 40 years, retiring as is president.
Survivors include his wife Jessica and two sons.
Arrangements are by Lake Lawn.

Laura Lydia Zaunbrecher Bellard died on Wednesday, December 18, 2013. She was 85. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, December 23, 2013 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mowata. Rite of Committal will follow in the St. Lawrence Cemetery with Father Joseph Tran Celebrant.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her four sons, Michael Bellard and wife, Betty of Rayne, Charles Bellard and wife, Jocelyn of Mowata, Jude Bellard and wife, Arleen of Eunice and Dale Bellard of Mowata; three daughters, Sophie Bellard Guillory and husband, Larry of West Monroe, Carolyn Bellard Danton and husband, Thomas of Lafayette and Lynell Bellard Guillory and husband, Mitchell of Eunice; four brothers, Stanley Zaunbrecher of Mowata, Robert Zaunbrecher and wife, Claudette of LeCompte, Ronnie Zaubrecher and wife, Elaine and Butch Zaunbrecher all of Iowa; six sisters, Helen Z. Thevis of Mowata, Margaret Z. Reagan and husband, Larry of Egan, JoAnn Z. Meyer of Roberts Cove, Francis “Teenie” Z. Fruge of Eunice, Jeanette Z. Holtzapple of Lafayette and Edna Mae Z. Leger and husband, Michael of Bell City.; 14 grandchildren, Jessica Pourciau, Ashley Hutchinson, Brooke McGee, Brian Bellard, Patrick Bellard, Nicholas Bellard, Taylor Bellard, Allison Bellard, Krista Waggoner, Kenneth Danton, Adam Danton, John-Eric Guillory, Laura Guillory and Wesley Guillory and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis J. Bellard; son Kenneth Bellard; parents, Nicholas and Josephine Frey Zaunbrecher; granddaughter, Leslie Bellard; great-granddaughter, Sydney McGee; brothers, Lawrence and Louis Zaunbbrecher; and a sister, Thelma “Tillie” Leonards.
Visitation will be at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Eunice on Sunday, December 22nd from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and again on Monday, December 23rd 8:00 am at St. Lawrence Catholic Church until time of services. Deacon Thomas Adams will recite a Rosary at 7:00 pm Sunday evening.

State publicist
BATON ROUGE – Services for prominent sugar industry family member and state employee Elaine Ventress Johnson will be private. She died at age 92.
Her family operated Magnolia and Grenada Plantations in Iberville Parish. She was a publicist for the state Dept. of Education under Supt. Bill Dodd and also held public relations post in the Office of Elderly Affairs and the Office of Tourism. She was director of the Louisiana Civil War Centennial Commission.
Survivors include a daughter.

Former mayor
CLINTON – Services for former mayor Toler Hatcher will be Saturday. He died Dec. 18 at age 82.
He was Clinton mayor from 1997 until 2005. He had also served on the East Feliciana Parish School Board and on the Clinton Town Council. He had been a trainer for the Clinton High football team and the LSU football and boxing teams.
Survivors include his wife Melinda and two children.
Arrangements are by Charlet.

Reference librarian
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. – Services for former head of the Louisiana State Library Reference Department Ida Jensen are pending. She died at age 93.
She held several positions at LSU before serving as an Army librarian in Germany, then joining the Louisiana State Library.
Survivors include several step-children.
