Beulah Sonnier

EUNICE ~ Beulah Sonnier passed away on Friday December 20, 2013 at the age of 86.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday December 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mathilda’s Catholic Church in Eunice. Father Darren Eldrige will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mathilda’s Cemetery.
Beulah is survived by one daughter, Laura Thomas of Houston, TX; two sons, Ernest Sonnier, Jr. of Houston, TX and Steve Sonnier of Eunice; one sister, Ezora Bellard of Houston, TX; and thirteen grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Felician and Coralie Victoriane Guillory; her husband, Ernest Sonnier, Sr.; one daughter, Mary Ann Sonnier; one son, Lawrence Sonnier; four sisters, Victoria Vallere, Antonio Mays, Margaret Papillion, and James Guidry; and three brothers, Johnny Guillory, Bernice Guillory, and Phillip Guillory.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held on Monday December 23, 2013 at 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Quirk & Son Funeral Home.

Educator, NSU basketball player
BENTON – Services for coach, educator and a former Louisiana Mr. Basketball Phillip Haley, Sr. will be Monday. He died Dec. 19 at age 74.
He was selected Mr. Basketball in 1957 after four years at Belmont High. He was a four-year basketball letter man at Northwestern State and is a member of its Basketball Hall of Fame. He was a teacher and coach at Zachary High and Parkway High, before becoming an assistant principal, then principal at Airline High. He established the Bossier Parish Alternative School.
Survivors include his wife Pam and three children.
Arrangements are by Hillcrest.

Baptist lay leader
ALEXANDRIA – Services for computer company owner and Southern Baptist lay leader Carl Voda will be Monday. He died Dec. 21 at age 91.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of the World War II Pacific campaign. He was co-owner of House of Electronics and a founder of Time Trend Computers, one of the initial computer companies in Central Louisiana. He served as vice president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention and as State Brotherhood president. He was Louisiana representative on the Southern Baptist Brotherhood Commission and was its vice president.
Survivors include his wife Melba and a son.

Physician, pressure suit pioneer
LAFAYETTE – Services for Dr. Harold Jacobs, Jr., the first person to attain a simulated altitude of more than 100,000 feet and pressure suit pioneer, will be Monday. He died Dec. 19 at age 90.
He did pressure suit research while a member of the U.S. Air Force. He began an internal medicine and cardiology practice in Lafayette in 1951. He was chief of staff at Lafayette Sanitarium and Lafayette General. He was a clinical professor of internal medical at Louisiana School of Medicine.
Survivors include three children.
Arrangements are by Delhomme.

Dentist
ALEXANDRIA – Services for long-time dentist Dr. Dean Cason will be Monday. He died Dec. 21 at age 84.
He had a private practice for almost 40 years and was on staff at Rapides General and St. Frances Cabrini Hospitals. He was a dental consultant at LTI, Central State Hospital, Camp Beauregard and Louisiana Special Education Center.
Survivors include his wife Marian and three children.
Arrangements are by Hixson Brothers.

Korean vets advocate
PINEVILLE – Services for Korean War Veterans Association founder Clyde G. Durham, Jr. will be Monday. He died Dec. 21 at age 82.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, instrumental in formation of the area veterans association and an organizer of the Military Museum at Camp Beauregard. He was an advertising representative for the Alexandria Daily Town Talk for more than 40 years.
Survivors include his wife Barbara and two daughters.
Arrangements are by Hixson Brothers.

Attorney
SHREVEPORT – Services for attorney Martha Bush Chandler will be Monday. She died Dec. 21 at age 84.
She was a graduate of Tulane Law School. While an undergraduate at LSU she was vice president of the student body.

Pharmacist, youth coach
SHREVEPORT – Services for pharmacist and long-time youth baseball coach Paul “Steve” Sims will be Monday. He died at age 66.
He was a youth baseball coach for more than 40 years and on the Dixie Baseball board.
Survivors include his wife Marion and three children.
Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.

Donna Garrett Cruz died on Saturday December 21, 2013 at the age of 42.
Survivors include her parents, Franklin and Dawn Finn Garrett of Eunice; her husband, Felix Cruz of Eunice; one daughter, Veronica Cruz of Texas; three sons, Daniel P. Cruz, James Garrett, and Jimmy Cruz, all of Eunice; one brother, Scott Garrett of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
A Memorial Service has not been scheduled.

Patsy R. Fontenot died on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Acadian Medical Center in Eunice. She was 83.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Rite of Committal will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Father Dustin Dought officiating.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her son, Randy Fontenot and wife, Jackie of Eunice; daughter, Connie Tupper and husband, Woody of Mowata; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Trahan, Adriane Schultz, Chad Tupper, Katie Young and Emily Fontenot; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, L.D. Fontenot; son, Darrell Fontenot; and brother, Hinkley Duplechain.
Visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Eunice on Monday, December 23rd from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm and again on Tuesday, December 24th from 8:00 am until time of services. Father Joseph Tran will recite a Rosary at 7:00 pm Monday evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family.

Crime commissioner
NEW ORLEANS – Services will be Monday for former Metropolitan Crime Commission director Warren de Brueys. He died Dec. 21 at age 92.
As an FBI agent, he was dispatched from New Orleans to Dallas after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to compile a report on the early investigation of his murder. Conspiracy theorists later tried to link him to a variety of people, including Lee Harvey Oswald. He was the Crime Commission for 10 years after retiring from the FBI.
Survivors include two children.

Former city CAO
BERWICK – Services for retired city official Dave Thomas will be Thursday. He died Dec. 22 at age 74.
He retired as Berwick town clerk and chief administrative officer in 2001. He was on the board of Citrus Land Co.
Survivors include his wife Patricia and several children and step-children.
Arrangements are by Hargrave.

LSU prof emeritus
BATON ROUGE – Services for LSU Alumni Professor of English and Religious Studies, Emeritus Dr. John May will be Thursday. He died Dec. 21 age 82.
He was a long-time professor at LSU and was a Jesuit priest. He taught religion, literature and film at LSU and served as English Department chairman.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Lakelawn.

Long-time councilman
BALL – Services for long-time town councilman Jerry Giddings will be Friday. He died Dec. 22 at age 72.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and owner of a backhoe service. He was a Ball Town Council member for 23 years.
Survivors include his wife Fay and a son.
Arrangements are by Rush.

State Farm manager
PINEVILLE – Services for former State Farm district manager W.R. Wisenbaker will be Saturday. He died Dec. 22 at age 86.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was district manager for State Farm for more than 30 years. He was a founding member of Rapides Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife Patti, a son and two daughters.

Yolanda T. LeJeune died on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Lafayette General Medical Center. She was 60.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, December 27, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iota. Entombment will follow in the St. Joseph Mausoleum with Father Jude Thierry Celebrant.
Survivors include her husband, Rudy LeJeune; her father, Freddy Trumps; her three children, Michelle LeJeune Pousson and husband, Jamie, Kris LeJeune and wife, Kristian and Ross LeJeune and wife, Kelli, all of Iota; three sisters, Belinda Hebert of Tee Mamou, Paula Fontenot of Ville Platte and Monica Clement of Butte Larose and seven grandchildren, Devan, Reese, and Alysa Pousson, McKenzy and Tyler LeJeune, Gretta and Luke LeJeune.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Nathalie Guillory Trumps; a brother, Gregory Trumps and her in-laws, Sis and Shelton LeJeune.
Visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Iota on Thursday, December 26th from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm and again on Friday, December 27th from 8:00 am until time of services. Rita Hebert will recite a Rosary at 7 Thursday evening.

Survivors include one son, Charles Sylvester of Eunice, LA; five daughters, Sue Ortego and husband Jimmy of Eunice, LA, Gail Fontenot and husband Wayne of Ville Platte, LA, Faye Sylvester and husband Ronald of Grand Prairie, Charlene Kyeer and husband Timmy of Fenton, and Christine Green of Abbeville, LA; one step-daughter, Jeannie Daigle and husband Ted of Eunice, LA; one step-son, Michael Lejeune of Mamou, LA; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Sylvester, Jr. and Isaure Soileau Sylvester; his wife, Vernetta Bushnell Sylvester; a brother, Wayne Sylvester; a sister, Ethel Martel' and a son-in-law, Carl Green.

Former state fire marshal
NEW ROADS – Arrangements are pending for former state fire marshal Carrol Herring. He died Dec. 26 at age 86.
He was fire marshal from 1981 until 1990, for Govs. Dave Treen, Edwin Edwards and Buddy Roemer. He was also former director of the LSU Firemen Training Program, an institute later renamed in his honor.
Survivors include his wife Dot and two children.

BATON ROUGE – Services for businessman and president of Bart-Well Inc. Floyd Roberts, Sr. will be Saturday. He died Dec. 25 at age 90.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Baptist minister
BATON ROUGE – Services for long-time Baptist minister the Rev. Ace McVay will be Saturday. He died Dec. 24 at age 82.
He was a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran. He had pastored churches throughout Southeast Louisiana and Mississippi. He was a former Executive Board member of the Louisiana Baptist Convention as well as Vacation Bible School Director of the Greater Baton Rouge Baptist Association.
Survivors include his wife Mattilee, three children and three step-children.

GREENSBERG – Services for retired state director of probation and parole Morris “Junior” Easley, Jr. will be Tuesday. He died Dec. 29 at age 86.
He worked for the Department of Public Safety and Corrections for 44 years, and as director of probation and parole for 15. He was a member of the Louisiana Justice Hall of Fame.
Survivors include several children.

Industrial arts educator
BATON ROUGE – Services for industrial arts educator Andrew Gasperecz will be Tuesday. He died Dec. 27 at age 85.
A former teacher at DeRidder High and ULL, he was a leader in career, industrial arts, technical and proprietary education for the State Dept. of Education.
Survivors include his wife Phoebe, a son and a daughter.

Clinical pathologist
THIBODAUX – Services for noted pathologist Dr. Myrton “Myrt” Beeler will be Tuesday. He died Dec. 25 at age 91.
He established the doctoral program in clinical chemistry at LSU Medical School and was editor in chief of the American Journal of Clinical Pathology for years.
Survivors include two children.

Chemist
NEW ORLEANS – Services for noted chemist Dr. Aubry Dupuy, Jr. were Dec. 28. He died Dec. 25 at age 69.
He was branch chief with the EPA’s Environmental Chemistry Laboratory and a multiple recipient of the federal Gold Medal for Service.
Survivors include his wife Mary and three children.

She died on Friday, December 27, 2013.
Survivors include her husband, Glen Weideman of Eunice; one son, Craig Faul of Eunice; one step-daughter, Crystal Moore of Breaux Bridge; three brothers, Nelwood Ortego of Pine Prairie, Joe Ortego and Jimmy Ortego both of Eunice. and six grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Austin and Lizzida Fontenot Ortego; a daughter, Angela Ashworth; two sons, Chris and Patrick Faul; three brothers, Harry, Roland and Burkman Ortego; two sisters, Bonnie Bordelon and Jane O Conner.

Hilton Soileau, Sr. died on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at his residence. He was 85.
He retired from the United Postal Service after working 30 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a Merchant Seaman after serving in the Navy. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Disabled Veterans of America.
Survivors include two sons, Hilton Soileau, Jr. and wife, Carolyn of Mamou, John Blake Soileau of Eunice and a daughter, Christa Vidrine of Lafayette; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife wife, Annette Soileau; his parents, Alius and Adia Ardoin Soileau; and sisters, Helena Conkerton and Beverly Sanders.
There will be no public services. Ardoin's is in charge of arrangements,

Jennifer Ann Miller, 56, died on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 11:15 pm at Savoy Medical Center in Mamou. Chapel services will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Mamou. Burial will follow in the Rougeau/Landreneau Cemetery in Mamou with Deacon Chuck Ortego officiating.
Survivors include her two children, Erick Wesley Miller and Tiffany Dawn Aymond, both of Mamou; four sisters, Sandy Granger, Debbie Valdez and Darlene Melancon, all of Mamou and Charlene Amiot of Eunice; two grandchildren, Christopher Shane Aymond and Payton Dean Aymond and her nanny, Shamara Ardoin of Ville Platte.
She was preceded in death by hger husband, Gerald Dean Miller ,and her parents, Mitchell and Wilma Dean Young Johnson.
Visitation will be held at Ardoin’s, Mamou, on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 from 1:30 pm until time of services on Wednesday.

Rite of Committal will follow in the New St. Ann’s Cemetery with Father Thainese as Celebrant.
Survivors include two sons, Lester J. Guillory, Jr. and his wife Sue of Louisville, KY and Michael W. Guillory and wife, Sherry of Hot Springs, Ark.; two daughters, Denise Guillory Fuselier of Eunice and Roxanne Guillory Smith and husband Ricky also of Eunice; four brothers, Raymond Thibodeaux and wife Ruby,Junius Thibodeaux, Jr. and wife Barbara and Julius “Butch” Thibodeaux and wife Jane, all of Lydia, and Kennie Thibodeaux and wife Sharon of Glouchester, Mass. and one sister, Priscilla Fondren of Lydia; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester J. Guillory, Sr., one daughter, Debbie Guillory; four sisters, Rosa Mae Prince, Bertha Walker, Frances Luent and Gwen Ardeneaux.
Visitation will be held at Ardoin’s, Mamou on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm. The Funeral Home will reopen on Tuesday morning at 8:00 am until time of services. A Rosary will be recited Monday at 7:00 pm by Deacon Chuck Ortego

Leola David Leger passed away on Tuesday December 31, 2013 at the age of 83.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday January 2, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Msg. Robert Romero will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery in Elton.
Leola is survived by two daughters, Priscilla Parker and her husband Dr. Stan of Fredericksburg, TX and Joan Poche' of Eunice; five sons, Deacon Robert Leger and his wife Becky and Tim Leger and his wife Wiona, both of Basile, Brian Leger and his wife Angie of Roberts Cove, Thomas Leger and his wife Annette of West Lake, and Barry Leger and his wife Kristin; one sister, Lula Doan of Sulphur; seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by, her parents, Ozema and Martha Darbonne David; one son, Michael Leger; one grandson, Andrew Leger; two sisters, Lucille Carlberg and Bessie Drumm; and four brothers, Merlin David, Marion David, Bert David, and Linton David.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held on Wednesday January 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Quirk & Son Funeral Home in Eunice. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. by Deacon Robert Leger. The funeral home will reopen at 8 a.m. for visitation until time of service.

Three-war aviator
MARKSVILLE – Services will be Friday for three-war aviation veteran Lt. Col. Philip Coll, US Air Force retired. He died Dec. 24 at age 93.
He was a veteran of World War II’s China-Burma-India air campaign, the Korean War and of the Vietnam War, including strikes on missile sites in North Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife Geraldine and three children.
Arrangements are by Melancon.

Blues musician
BATON ROUGE – Services are pending for noted blues musician Tabby Thomas. He died Jan 1 at age 84.
He was best known for his Louisiana-style blues, a hard-driving blues influenced by the Chicago bands. He opened a music club in Baton Rouge called Tabby’s Blues Box, which closed in November 2004.
Survivors include several children.

Decorated aviator
ALEXANDRIA – Services will be Saturday for decorated aviator Lt. Col. Harmon Dungan, Jr., U.S. Air Force retired. He died Dec. 30 at age 83.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He held the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Bronze Stars. After retirement he worked for Proctor and Gamble as a team manager and for CLECO. He was a member of the board of Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation, Montessori School, the Salvation Army and the Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife Kathleen and four children.
Arrangements are by John Kramer & Son.

Noted educator
SHREVEPORT – Services for long-time educator J.S. “Bubba” Cook, Jr. will be Friday. He died Dec. 30 at age 83.
He was principal of Woodlawn High School for 19 years and was an ardent volunteer in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools School Improvement Process. He worked in that program with schools in most Louisiana parishes.
Survivors include his wife Lois and two children.

LAFAYETTE – Services are Friday for attorney and former Zoning Board member Melvin Maxwell. He died Dec. 29 at age 75.
He was a real estate attorney and owner of Insured Title Co. and active in the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association.
Survivors include a daughter.

Wetlands expert
BATON ROUGE – Services for retired LSU professor Dr. Robert Chabreck will be Jan. 11. He died Dec. 30 at age 80.
He was an expert in wetlands and marsh management, with special expertise in the area of plant and animal management in the coastal zone. He retired as professor of forestry and wildlife in the School of Renewable Natural Resouces at LSU. He was an expert on alligators and served on international teams studying them. He was a recipient of the Louisiana Governor’s Award - Conservationist of the Year.
Survivors include his wife Merle, two sons and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Rabenhorst.

Surgeon, professor
NEW ORLEANS – Services for former surgeon and university professor Dr. Charles Breaux will be Monday in Birmingham, Ala. He died Dec. 25 at age 82.
He was former chief of surgical service at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital and clinical associate professor of surgery at Tulane. He later opened Mercy (Cooper Green) Hospital in Birmingham and was chief of surgery, chief of staff and president of Jefferson Clinic and served on the faculty of the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
Survivors include three sons and a daughter.

Jesuit priest
OPELOUSAS – Services for Jesuit priest the Rev. Donald Hawkins will be Saturday. He died Dec. 30 at age 67.
He was a former faculty member and chair of the theology department at Jesuit High, New Orleans. He was former rector of the Jesuit community at Spring Hill College and was later assigned to St. Charles College, where he was retreat director at the Jesuit Spirituality Center.

Emerson 'Ta Ta' Abshire, former mayor, police juror

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home for Emerson P. “Ta Ta” Abshire, 81, who died Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 3:35 a.m. at American Legion Hospital in Crowley.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Morse. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the US Army. He and his wife owned and operated Morse Food Mart for 29 years. He served as Mayor of Morse from 1966 to 1978 and served on the Acadia Parish Police Jury from 1976-1995.

Fr. Clint Trahan, Pastor of Immaculate Conception-Morse, will officiate for the services. The family requests visiting hours Friday from 12 noon to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to service time. A rosary will be recited Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in North Hanks Cemetery.

Mr. Abshire is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley Hanks Abshire of Morse; two sons, Ray Abshire and his wife Peggy of Lafayette, Todd Abshire and his wife Colleen of Crowley; seven grandchildren, Travis Abshire, Brent Abshire, Brittany Abshire, Paige Abshire, Cade Abshire, Madison Laughlin and Miles Laughlin; eight great-grandchildren, Payton J. Morvant, Paisley Grace Morvant, Maddux Abshire, Kaden Abshire, Isaiah Abshire, Audrey Abshire, E. J. Abshire and Andre Abshire; one brother, Huey Abshire of Arlington, TX.; numerous nieces and nephews along with loving family friends, Marian and David Laughlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Remus and Ada LeLeux Abshire; five brothers, Sandrus, Allison, Chester, Jed and Rudy Abshire; two sisters, Beatrice Fontenot and Thelma Guidry; one half-sister, Eunice Palombo.

Pallbearers will be Todd Abshire, Cade Abshire, Ray Abshire, Brent Abshire, Travis Abshire and Brittany Abshire.

LSU Shreveport prof
LEESVILLE – Services for former school superintendent and college professor Dr. Lawrence Garrison will be Tuesday. He died Jan. 3.
He most recently was associate professor and department chair at LSU Shreveport.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Mary Williamson, and two daughters.
Arrangements are by Labby Memorial.

Former Miss Cenetenary
SHREVEPORT – Services for former a Miss Centenary, Kathryn Deboben Waggenspack, will be Tuesday. She died Jan. 4 at age 83.
Survivors include a brother and a sister.

Linda Darnell Duffell died on Friday January 3, 2014 at the age of 73.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday January 6, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Basile. Pastor Charlie Rushing and Pastor Dwayne Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Blue Branch Cemetery in Pitkin under direction of Quirk & Son, Basile.
Survivors include two nieces, Debbie D. Cole and Brenda D. Rushing; three nephews, Richard Fitts, Michael Duffell, and Raymond Duffell; six great-nieces, Rea-lynn Cole Perkins, Alyssa Cole, Alanna Fitts Lee, Meagan Dejean, Roseann Duffell, and Rachel Duffell; and eight great -nephews, Steven Cole, Richie Fitts, Chad Rushing, Zachary Duffell, Todd Duffell, Chris Duffell, Corey Duffell, Sean Duffell, Christopher Duffell, and Anthony Duffell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Mary Ola Terrell Duffell; two sisters, Charlene D. Fitts Curtis and Odessa Duffell; two brothers, Bobby Gene Duffell and Johnny Duffell; and one nephew, Robert Duffell.
