With both sadness and joy in the hope of the Resurrection, her family announces the passing from earth to eternal life of Mrs. Verda Mae Huckaby Siffert, on Monday, October 19, 2015, at the age of 82. Born May 23, 1933, Mrs. Siffert was a life-long resident of Eunice. A funeral Mass will take place at 10am on Friday, October 23 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Eunice, with Fr. William Schambough, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Eunice.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Herschell Siffert, her parents, Alton and Evora Huckaby, her stepmother, Eulalie Huckaby, her siblings Betty LeCoq, James Huckaby, Kathleen Briscoe and Alton "Tony'' Huckaby, and her daughter-in-law Tammy Thevis Siffert.
She is survived by her children: Mary Siffert Balleza, Linda (Charles) Hulme, John (Juanita) Siffert, James (Sandra) Siffert, Dolores (David) Coffey, Robert Siffert, Margaret Siffert, Paul (Cindy) Siffert and Chris Siffert, 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 more on the way.
She is also survived by her sisters, Patsy Chatman, and Becky (Craig) Miller, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jeff McGee, Kevin Morgan, and Preston ''Willie'' Richard are very dear friends who have become part of our extended family.
After raising her family, Verda worked at WalMart and retired at age 70, to spend more time with her growing number of grand and great-grandchildren. Her relationship with every grand and great-grandchild was built on the formula of Food plus Family equals Love, which inspired the recent compilation of family recipes in a Siffert family cook book. Throughout her life, Verda was a voracious reader who ended every day by reading until she fell asleep. Years ago, she enjoyed making items for and working in the Country Store at the annual St. Edmund Spring Fair. Verda was a weekly Eucharistic adorer, until her health declined, and participated in a weekly Monday morning Rosary group.
Verda and Herschell valued a good Catholic education. They worked and sacrificed to ensure that all of their children were prepared to enter the work force or college after high school graduation from St. Edmund. Their shared Catholic faith, strong work ethic, and value system formed the foundation for the adult each child became.
The family extends their deep appreciation to Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation and its staff; Community Hospice; Ms. Shanlonder, Ms. Rosetta, Ms. Nelda, Ms. Merlie, Ms. Ann, and Ms. Jeanette, who provided daily comfort and reassurance to Verda that she was never alone. The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to Coby and Kessie Thomas for bringing Verda the Eucharist and for their presence and prayerful support.
